http://www.attivissimo.net/antibufala/giulia_leucemia/donazioni_sangue.htm

Passenger screening gimmick stuck at the gate | The Register   29.3.05   0 commenti   Aggiungi un commento

Passenger screening gimmick stuck at the gate | The Register: "The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is behind schedule in developing a new terrorist-busting database system called Secure Flight... here we have something out of Star Trek, in which taxpayers are investing billions, with so many potential points of failure that it will be a miracle if it doesn't increase the risk of hijackings.

It be full of bad data that will repeatedly flag and inconvenience the wrong travellers. (The existing CAPPS system didn't stop the 9/11 hijackers, although it did catch US Senator Edward Kennedy and former singer Cat Stevens, for example.)

Worse, a system such as this is, by design, exceptionally easy for terrorists to reverse-engineer. By making a series of 'dry runs,' a terrorist crew can easily learn which members get flagged and which don't, insight of tremendous value for choosing the individuals most likely to succeed in an actual attack."

Crittografia quantistica in GB   29.3.05   0 commenti   Aggiungi un commento

Quantum crypto comes to Blighty | The Register: "UK reseller NOW Wireless has signed a deal to distribute MagiQtech's quantum cryptography solution, MagiQ QPN Security Gateway, in the UK. Launched in the US in 2004, MagiqTech's two-box solution, provides secure quantum key exchange between two dedicated sites up to 120km apart. Once secure keys are exchanged, data can be encrypted using standard protocols, switching keys at up to 100 times per second...

There are a few problems with quantum cryptography, however. While it cannot be cracked, in the traditional sense of the word, it is susceptible to a denial-of-service-style attack... It is also difficult to route, since the routing process itself would access, and thus disrupt the data being routed. Until this problem is solved, QC is limited to use between two dedicated points."

EU sleuths think Microsoft sabotaged Windows

...the European Commission is investigating the possibility that the Vole has sneakily sabotaged the Media Player-free versions of Windows it is obliged to ship to the EU... A report in today’s Wall Street Journal suggests Microsoft has fiddled with the registry in its stripped-down Windows offerings and the result is that video clips embedded into Microsoft Word documents don’t run properly, for example.

The Journal quotes Jonathan Todd, a spokesman for European antitrust chief Neelie Kroes... he said, "the commission has to verify the requirement that Microsoft refrain from using any commercial, technological or contractual terms that would have the effect of rendering the unbundled version of Windows less attractive or less functional."

The chance to win theatre tickets is enough to make people give away their identity, reveals a survey. Of those taking part 92% revealed details such as mother's maiden name, first school and birth date. The detailed personal information was gathered by market researchers who asked the questions as part of a fake survey on theatre-going habits. Dangling the chance to win free tickets was enough to make people surrender everything needed to impersonate them.... One of the questions was about the way that actors pick stage names. Those taking part in the survey were told that many stage names are created using a pet's name and the actor's mother's maiden name. When asked what their stage name would be using the same criteria, 94% volunteered information.

http://www.zeusnews.it/news.php?cod=3979

Apple de-socializes iTunes | The Register   22.3.05   0 commenti   Aggiungi un commento

Apple de-socializes iTunes | The Register: "Bit by bit, Apple is tightening the DRM noose, reducing the amount of freedom its own customers enjoy. Last year, the company cut the number of times users could burn a playlist from ten to seven. This time, Apple has chosen to cripple one of its coolest and most socially beneficial technologies - Rendezvous.

Apple actually applied the restriction two months ago, but the passage of time hasn't made it any sweeter. In iTunes, Rendezvous allows users on the same subnet to share their music - although this is limited to streaming only. But the most recent version of iTunes, 4.7.1, restricts that streaming capability even further, and users aren't happy, as this support discussion shows. It used to support five simultaneous listeners, but now iTunes only permits five listeners a day."

After cable recall, Xbox's still frying | The Register: "14 million games console owners are still at risk of waking up to find their Xbox has become an ex-box. For when Microsoft issued a safety advisory for Xbox customers last month, it failed to address the underlying problem.

After several reports of consoles catching fire, Microsoft urged 14 million console owners to send in their old power leads for a replacement. But hardware experts point out that the power cable was never at root of the problem: it simply made the existing problem worse. The meltdown, and subsequent fire risk was actually caused by wear and tear on the power supply used in early models of the Xbox. The replacement cable featured a trip, which cut down the risk of your house catching fire, but left unfortunate gamers with a fried console. The cord has an interrupter switch that acts like a conventional fuse, tripping power to the unit."

EC raps MS over interoperability - again | The Register: "The European Commission (EC) has accused Microsoft of not properly complying with the sanctions laid out as part of its anti-trust ruling in 2004, particularly on the question of interoperability.

It says the software giant is not making it easy enough for companies who want to take a licence for Microsoft's data protocols to access the necessary documentation; that the licences are too extensive, covering unwanted items; that the terms and conditions of the license mean some open source developers can't take advantage of the protocols; and finally that the royalties demanded are too high."
